Boston Dynamics Spot 5.2 lets AI agents dispatch factory robots
Boston Dynamics released Spot 5.2 and an Orbit update that connect plant systems—CMMS, MES, PLCs, cameras—to its Spot robot. A new Model Context Protocol layer lets AI agents send Spot on inspections when a sensor alerts or other business rules fire. Orbit’s visual inspections now use Google Gemini, including video checks for leaks and slipping conveyors, plus Site Scans for spills and other facility risks, and new predictive-maintenance tools for gas sensing, visual vibration analysis and partial discharge.
What it means for manufacturers and fabricators
This is the direction many shops are heading: AI that does not just flag a problem on a screen, but can send a robot to look, listen or measure on the floor when something looks off.
